On the 23rd of June 2016 , United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union . Over three and half years on, with not much progress achieved, many professionals were feeling uncertain on how the Brexit will impact their businesses. Based on Office National Statistics reports we can analyze past decade of construction industry. It increased by 2.5% in 2019 follows 0.0% growth in 2018 (including 3.4% growth in new work in 2019 compare to 0.4% fall in 2018). The number of construction companies has reached in 2018 it’s highest level on record with 326.736 companies. On the other hand, there were 3202 insolvencies in 2018 across the sector, means 14.7% more than in previous, 2017 year. The second highest level on record in construction in 2018 was a sector-related employment, which increased by 2.8% to 1.36 million workers. The average salary increased as well to the Ł635 per week in last month of 2018. Interesting and disappointing is the construction labor productivity, which fell by 4.8% in 2018. The referendum seems to be the reason of change in long-term migration structure in UK. According to Office National Statistic, in 2018 the largest 5 numbers of immigrants to the UK were from India (58.000), China (52.000), Italy (27.000), USA (26.000) and Romania (26.000). To clarify the balance of the migration, it should be pointed that in 2018 the five largest number of emigration from UK were to Poland (24.000), Australia (23.000), France (22.000), Spain (21.000) and USA (20.000). The 31st January 2020 is the historic date – UK exited the EU . Done. But, is that mean country is ready to deal with EU companies? Are UK’s construction businesses ready for new rules? Who will replace Polish construction workers? People from Romania or China? An increase in demand of construction works, lower workforce productivity, higher salaries, skills shortage, migration changing … Does the industry know how to deal with new reality? Do the people who are planing new constructions projects know they will probably have to pay more? The are the questions we do not have a simple answers to at the moment.
